The Department of Aviation English is a structural and specialized unit of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education and provides language training for aviation specialists in accordance with modern international aviation standards and the requirements of ICAO and STANAG 6001. It was created as a response to the need of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for specialists who speak English at a professional level to participate in international missions, joint exercises and operations. The department functions as a key center for training military aviators and engineers in English-language communication. It consistently enhances its educational approaches by adopting modern methodologies and international standards in English language teaching.
The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department are highly qualified teachers with significant experience in the field of aviation terminology, international communication and military education. Among them: 2 professors, 3 associate professors who are candidates of philological and pedagogical sciences, 6 senior lecturers and 6 lecturers with experience of language internships abroad, 4 certified specialists in aviation English. The educational process is additionally supported by training room supervisors and the laboratory’s engineering and technical staff..
The Department of Aviation English provides professional language training for cadets, trainees and officers of the aviation profile in accordance with international standards, in particular the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and trains cadets of the Pilot Training and Aviation Engineering faculties, providing teaching of the following disciplines:
“Foreign language (general course)” for cadets of the I-II years:
“Foreign language (general military course)” for cadets of the II-III years;
“Foreign language (military-special course)” for cadets of the 3rd-4th courses;
“Foreign language (terminology of military-scientific texts)” for master’s students;
“Intensive foreign language course for the Pilot Training faculty” (Aviation English);
“Intensive foreign language course for the Aviation Engineering faculty” (F-16 terminology);
“Intensive foreign language course for officers” (Radio communication).
Our goal is to form a high level of language and communicative competence in higher education applicants for the effective performance of professional duties in conditions of real aviation activity and international interaction.
The main areas of activity of the department:
– language training of cadets and students in aviation English to ensure effective professional communication in the international aviation environment;
– development of radio communication skills in accordance with the requirements of ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements (LPR), Doc 9835 and Doc 9432;
– preparation for international exams in aviation English (ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements (LPR) and STANAG 6001);
– development of educational and methodological support (programs, manuals, dictionaries) for the training of military aviation specialists;
– scientific activity aimed at researching issues of linguistic didactics, methods of teaching a foreign language for specific purposes and military terminology;
– implementation of modern educational technologies (distance learning for self-improvement, CLIL, intensive courses);
– participation in research work and international projects.
The department actively cooperates with Ukrainian and foreign educational and aviation institutions, participates in international conferences, linguistic research aimed at improving the quality of language training of military personnel in the aviation sector.
The main task of the department is to teach specialists in the aviation field: to confidently communicate in English in international airspace; to be prepared to perform tasks within the framework of international aviation operations; to meet the requirements of modern professional aviation communication.
